Baking in the Blackstone Valley
Cook-off Rules and What-not
1. This is an event sponsored by the Blackstone Valley Interpreter Network in partnership with the John H. Chaffee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor and its partner organizations. The cook-off will take place October 25, 2009 from 11:30 A.M. to 3 P.M. (approximately). The location is River Bend Farm at 287 Oak Street, Uxbridge, MA 01569.
2. This is a rain or shine event!!
3. This is a family event, and will be open to the general public.
4. This is a fun cook-off and there are no ingredient rules except (you know there had to be exceptions):
a. The main ingredient is apple.
b. All apples used must be from the Blackstone Valley.
c. Two copies of your recipe must be submitted with each dish.
5. The entry must be made prior to the event at your home or place of business. If the entry needs to be warm while eaten, please place in an insulated casserole dish or crock pot. We cannot ensure electric outlets will be available to keep your food warm.
6. Judging will take place by the celebrity and guest judges. There will be a winner declared in each of the three categories. The winning entry, as determined by the judges, will be awarded a trophy and publicity on the Footsteps in History website.
7. Contestants are responsible for supplying their own serving utensils. The Corridor will provide tasting plates and spoons for each judge. Be sure to label your utensils and dishes to ensure they find you at the end of the competition.
8. Please print out or write (legible) two copies of the recipe including ingredients. One copy will be attached to your dish. This is to protect the judges in case of food allergies… not that we don’t trust you! The second one will be kept with your registration form and guarantee that if it becomes separated we can still credit you for your creation. By signing the registration and entering this competition, you are giving permission to the Blackstone Valley Interpreter Network and its partner organizations to use your recipe and to post recipes on the Footsteps in History Website, complete with your name.
9. There are three categories for entry: Historic Recipe, Most Creative Use of Apples and Traditional Apple Pie. To qualify as a historic recipe, the entry must be a dish commonly found in New England colonial kitchens. As this is a fun event, no recipe will be disqualified for its historic incorrectness, but points will be awarded for entries submitted with documentation (hint, hint).
10. One entry per person per category. So for you die-hard cooks, that is three opportunities to win! If you are entering in more than one category, please complete one registration form for each dish because each dish will have a different entry number.
11. Entries are due at the registration table between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. Judging will begin promptly at 12:30 pm. Judging will be completed when all entries have been tasted and rated or the judges explode.
12. There is a $5.00 per entry registration fee. Please make checks payable to the CorridorKeepers. Credit cards are not accepted.
13. Complete the registration page before you get to the event to save time and hassle. If we have to complete the form for you, you might be accidentally called Fred Shiglemeyer.
14. Scoring will be based on the following scales:
a. Most Creative Use of Apples: ten (10) points for taste, ten (10) points for attractive presentation and ten (10) points for creativity for a maximum score of thirty (30) points.
b. Traditional Apple Pie: ten (10) points for taste, ten (10) points for attractive presentation and ten (10) points for crust (taste & flakiness) for a maximum score of thirty (30) points.
c. Historic Recipe: ten (10) points for taste, ten (10) points for attractive presentation and ten (10) points for historic authenticity for a maximum score of thirty (30) points.
